The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton offers innovative noninvasive imaging for heart disease and heart disorders using advanced Computed Tomography (CT) technology. Denton is one of three hospitals in the DFW Metroplex that offers heart imaging services using the Siemens Somatom Definition Flash 256-slice CT scanner. This innovative scanner provides precise imaging to create pictures of your heart for diagnosis. The 256-slice CT scanner produces quality images by acquiring four times more data faster than before. The scanner can capture a complete three dimensional (3D) scan of the heart in just one heartbeat, and a full body scan can be completed as quickly as five seconds. Faster imaging capture means our guests spend less time in the scanner. This is helpful for our guests who have difficulty holding their breath.
This innovative technology allows the specialists on our medical staff to view your heart from any angle. A CT scan combines X-ray images with computer technology. This combination produces cross-sectional views of your body or specific organs, such as the heart. The scan shows the heart's anatomy and the vessels leading to and from the heart, such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The scanner detects plaque or blockages in your coronary (heart) arteries that may otherwise go undetected. Additionally, it allows for the detection of other structural or functional problems of your heart.
The 256-slice scanner is considered safer than other scanners. The CT scan software allows for more precise imaging while reducing the amount of radiation used. Compared to the more common 64-slice CT scanners, the 256-slice CT scanner can reduce radiation exposure by up to 90 percent, while allowing for more detailed, 3D views. The software can adjust the radiation dose based on which part of the body it is scanning or to a specific phase in the cardiac cycle. The innovative software only uses higher radiation doses when needed and lowers the dose at other times. For example, in women when the scan goes around the chest, it lowers radiation around breast tissue. When it revolves past breast tissue, the radiation dose will increase as needed.
In addition to heart disease, the specialists on the medical staff of The Heart Hospital use the 256-slice CT scanner to detect and help diagnose vascular disease. The scanner can capture images of the vascular system in four to six seconds using a minimal amount of contrast dye. The scanner reconstructs any artery, organ, or bone in the body in 3D imaging as well as shows blood flow through the brain or heart.

With imaging radiation, it is not just a one-time (or few-time) exposure that can lead to issues but an accumulative effect over a longer period and many exposures to radiation. This can become a risk in our guests with other conditions who may need multiple scans over a longer period of their lives. Radiation from CT scans represent two percent of all cancers, and anyone under the age of 40, especially young children are considered at higher risk for damage from radiation.
